3. Put pleasures in life

One of the dangers of modern life is being misinterpreted on social media. A post about new job success can be interpreted by some as bragging or boasting or being too full of self-importance. And we like to steer clear of being tagged with those labels. But sometimes we can oversteer.

People can often not value themselves highly enough. We even effectively downgrade ourselves by denying our pleasures. We can put other people’s needs first, and see ourselves at the back of the queue, ‘when we get around to it’.

The danger is that we never get around to it. Some parents can be like this. They put their children’s needs so much above their own that they give themselves no personal time and space at all. Even if you don’t think you deserve to enjoy yourself right now, make sure you do things you like doing.

Putting pleasures in life — not just doing the chores and work because you feel you don’t have the energy for anything else — is a fundamental plank in building a platform of personal resilience, beating the exhaustion funnel (chapter 5: All the feels, see page 75) and breaking out of a state of languishing.
